Phantom Band 360 by Brian Rodgers - DVD

A totally new take on the classic idea of solid thru solid. Here's how it goes:

Phase One - Borrow a bill and show a normal everyday rubber band. Fold the bill in half, then fold the bill around the band. One end of the band is inside the bill, with the other on the outside. Then slowly melt the band entirely to the inside of the bill!

Phase Two - Show the bill with the band inside it, from both sides. You can even have spectators behind you during the entire effect! Take one end of the band out of the bill, leaving the other still hooked inside the bill. Then visibly and slowly melt the band right thru the bill!

The ONLY band and bill penetration effect out there that can be done:

A card is selected, replaced, the deck shuffled, then cut into several piles by the spectator.

A bottle is shown. The spectator spins the bottle, eliminating cards until a single card is left.

All the fun of having a Finger Chopper effect without a Finger Chopper!

Effect: The magician shows five cards, four having guillotine stocks on them, and one has the blade, all of which have a hole in the center.

The magician places the blade card between the four stock cards. You then make the blade card stick out above the other cards so you can see the hole that goes through it.

The magician invites a spectator to place his palm out like a table, with his thumb sticking out above the palm. You now place the spectator's thumb through the holes of the cards. The magician now plunges the blade card through the spectator's thumb.

The magician removes the top portion of the cards revealing the blade card, which can be signed before, and given to the spectator after. He then removes the undamaged blade card and places it on the table. The rest of the cards are removed, and all of the cards are counted and shown to be unharmed.

Display three coins, a coffee cup, and a BIC pen. "Watch closely," you advise while holding one of the coins. Wave the pen over your hand and the coin disappears, then pick up the cup and suddenly there's a loud clink - the coin has mysteriously dropped inside!

Say, "This time I won't touch the cup." Take the second coin and wave the pen over your hand. Again the coin vanishes, and again there is a loud clink inside the cup even though no one is anywhere near it! Dump out both coins, display them, then replace them inside.

"This time I'll cover the cup so there's no way the coin could get inside." Use a deck of cards to cover the mouth of the cup. Take the last coin in your hand and slowly wave the pen, explaining, "It's going to happen on the count of three. One, two..."

"Three!" At that instant the coin vanishes from your hand and a loud clink is heard from inside the cup. You reach over, lift off the deck and dump all three coins from the cup, leaving your audience completely flabbergasted!

Wait until you see how good this looks! And there's no reset - just toss the coins back into the cup and you're ready to go again. You will receive the complete illustrated routine along with a diabolical gimmick that looks like a BIC pen.

You supply the coffee cup and three coins. It works with quarters, half dollars, even foreign coins.

Effect #1

A spectator selects a card from the deck, commits it to memory, and then buries it in the pack. There is no shuffling from this point on. Upon discussing the marvelous new medical benefits that have been made possible through nanotechnology, the magician removes a piece of “Nano-X-Ray Film” from his pocket and hands it out for examination. After receiving it back, he explains the film's incredible ability to capture x-ray images of practically any material it comes in contact with. However, there is a catch! “This new technology has not been completely perfected and there is an element of danger involved!”
He places the film onto the hand of the spectator who selected the card, to absorb a small sample of her DNA. He explains that this is necessary to activate the film. Then, slowly, he lowers the green film over the top of the deck and to everyone's amazement, the identity of the selected card burns its image onto the film - permanently! As he hands the film out for examination he explains that the film's ability to focus on a single card out of 52 is amazing. But the process damages the rest of a perfectly good deck. The magician turns the cards over and fans them out to reveal that every card in the deck is now completely blank, except for the selected card!
“As you can see scientists are not prepared to test this on humans!"

Effect #2

A card is selected and then shuffled back into the deck. Upon placing the deck on the table, the magician draws everyone's attention to his wallet. He cracks it open to reveal an interesting new piece of technology – Nano X-ray Film! He goes on to explain the shiny green film's uncanny ability to take x-ray images of practically any object. He removes the film from his wallet and places it on the deck. Amazingly, and to everyone's astonishment, an image of the selected card slowly develops onto the green film! But wait, there's more! The magician explains that the image isn't a mere facsimile of the selected card, but actual particles of the card itself, which are being slowly absorbed onto the film! He lifts the film off the deck and in plain view places it back into his wallet, and places the wallet down on the table a few inches from the deck. The magician explains that the microscopic particles are transferring from the selected card to the film, and in a moment the entire process will be complete. After a few moments pass, he picks up the deck and spreads it out so that every card can be seen. He asks a spectator to sift through the deck and locate the selected card. Surprisingly, after a thorough search the selected card is missing! Fairly and in plain view the magician reaches over and picks up his wallet. As he slowly opens it the green film has completely transformed into something else – The Selected Playing Card! “It slowly dematerialized in the deck, then re-materialized onto the special film...now that's real magic!”

Entire trick can be reset in seconds…. No sleight of hand required for either effect…. No rough or smooth cards…. Film resets instantly…. This is not a printing trick or optical illusion, the film actually captures an image that will remain until magician resets…. No switching of any kind…. And amazingly, this advanced technology can be added to any ordinary deck at a moments notice! Complete with instructional DVD and all necessary props, including special film.

Amazing Shrinking Deck (Blue) by John Kennedy

Bring out a deck of Bicycle cards and remove it from its box. Spread the cards on the table as you ask, "Did anyone notice that I removed these cards from a tiny box?" To everyone's surprise you are now holding a miniature Bicycle card box; the poker-sized box is completely gone!

Scoop up the deck as you explain, "There's no way this deck could fit inside that box - unless the cards were tiny, too." Spread the cards on the table and now they too have shrunken to miniature Bicycle cards!

Remove a card from the spread and place it aside. Say, "I can change them back, but it happens quickly so watch closely." Scoop up the deck and give it a shake - it grows back to poker size right before everyone's eyes!

Point to the miniature card that you placed aside and say, "Now for the last one..." Wave your hand and it instantly expands to poker size!

The Amazing Shrinking Deck is the perfect opening card trick because you can immediately use the deck for other card tricks. Why? Because at the conclusion you're holding an ordinary deck of Bicycle cards! No switching is needed!

Effect: A small and very elegant walnut box is displayed and examined. The lid is opened and a solid plate of glass fills the entire interior of the box. The glass is examined by the spectator, who drops it back into the box and closes the lid. You ask the spectator to pick up the Silver Dollar that has been in full view and place it into the slot on the top of the box. You now hold the box up to the spectator's eye level and as you gently shake the box, the coin is seen to penetrate the glass and fall through the box and onto the floor or the spectator's cupped hands!

Jumbo Mental Jackpot by Astor

You show four large transparent plastic envelopes. One contains a banknote, while the other three have a piece of white paper inside.

On the back of each transparent envelope there is a colored dot (red, yellow, blue and green). You now show four jumbo cards numbered 1 to 4.

These too have colored dots on the backs. Three spectators freely choose a Jumbo card and receive the envelope with the corresponding color.

Naturally all three spectators end up with the envelope containing the white piece of paper while you can keep the banknote.

This effect uses only the four cards and four envelopes. No switch is needed. The spectators can freely choose any of the cards.

No force involved! At the end everything can be examined. The routine is surprising and clear, performance is very simple, and does not require any sleight of hand.

INTRODUCTION [Excerpt]

As I write the introduction to this book I am on a flight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. I am presented with exactly forty-five minutes to sum up my feelings about the book.

A lot has contributed to the style in which this book has been written; among other things a recent transatlantic relocation from the UK to the USA to make a home in Las Vegas. I now find myself a married man, and to top it all off I have even begun work on that traveling freak show I have been dreaming about for oh so long. As I write this I am currently on my way out of Las Vegas--the magical capital of the world--feeling very ill from the extreme turbulence on an otherwise uninteresting flight. Vegas is a town that has in the short while I have lived here already deeply affected my approach to magic and mentalism. Las Vegas really is the best place in the world to see both great and terrible magic. From the best of the best to the worst of the worst, Vegas is your place.

The bulk of this book was written as I lived and worked as a traveling performer. Much of the book being written on planes, in hotels and while generally on the road. There really is a great advantage to having a mobile office. As one of the publishers of this book would say: “as long as there's a Starbucks, we're good to go.”

The book was written in this fashion with my thoughts being collected in essay form while on the road. Now, looking back over it, I find it a genuinely nosaltigic read. The task of elaborating on my traveling essays to make them more complete and lucid was much like reading an old travel journal or diary from years past.

Certain essays remind me of specific performances and places. Others remind me of various TV shows I have worked on. I hold many good memories attached to the writing in this book and some not so good memories.

The one thing the ideas presented in this book all have in common is that they were formed in part because of the countless “bad” magic and mentalism shows I have encountered on my journeys. From live performances to certain recent “TV Stars”, bad magic is simply bad magic.

It is these “bad magic/mentalism shows” that are the true inspiration for this book. Without having witnessed so much bad magic and mentalism I would never have been moved to examine my own performances at a deeper level. It was this examination triggered by these performances that inspired my feelings and thoughts as recorded in this book. So in a way I have all the shows that have made me feel sick watching to thank for their inspiration in questioning my own performances at a deeper level.

It is my hope that you enjoy what is presented in this book. You will of course not agree with everything I have written, and this is the whole point!

The best thing I could ever hope to achieve with this book is to encourage you to question your own performances in the same way I have questioned my own. If you do this, we together are fighting against those “bad magic/mentalism” shows I know we both hate so much. Together with our love for the art that has given us so much, we now have the chance to give it something back. Lets keep magic and mentalism as exciting to our audiences as it is to us.

Enjoy your journey and maybe our paths will cross along the way.

This chapter outlines my own personal beliefs on presenting contemporary mentalism. From the structure of an effect to building a routine and a show. Each point is complete with working examples from my own repertoire.

This chapter outlines the attention to detail that I feel is needed to make a truly compelling performance. It also features a working example of how applying the small touches to an effect can make all the difference.

A collection of presentational additions that can be added into many effects that you already perform as well as all the effects featured within this book. These range from the use of a slinky as a pendulum right the way up to saying the alphabet backwards and writing inside out verse. These touches are used throughout the book to build compelling demonstrations and will be referenced throughout from this chapter.

CHAPTER SIX

TOUCHING ON HOY – THE REAL WORK

This chapter features possibly the strongest, prop free, anywhere, anytime demonstration of mind reading available to the mentalist. Featuring brand new work on my original effect as well as three different effects that are achieved with the same basic conceptual methodology. This chapter also includes new work on the effect eliminating the need for a psychological force, a new and bold out for the brave performer, a new idea from which a miracle could spring “the Stranger’s Name Concept” and also features a guest contribution from Chicago’s Chris Carter.

CHAPTER SEVEN

HAIL DUNNINGER – A PRINICPLE AND AN EFFECT

In this chapter I take a closer look at the “Dunninger Ploy” and describe its use in relation to a card effect using a prop you almost certainly already own.

A LOOK AT TV MAGIC/MENTALISM FROM EDITING TO BROADCAST

Here I share my personal thoughts on the world of TV magic. From selective editing to pre-show work and dirty “camera tricks”.

Kandu's Hank & Rope Trick by Jef Eaton

Take a look at the picuture! You get all of that in a box, yes a box of magic!

A comedy kid show winner from kandu! And it's two tricks in one!

Effect #1 - Kandu's Hank Trick Plus:
The magician tells the audience he is going to perform the "Amazing Hank Trick" and displays a sign saying justthat. He then asks the kids to help by repeating "Amazing Hank Trick" every time he shows the sign. He tells the boy he will get a yellow and red hank, and the girl will get a green and blue hank. Why? Because he's doing "Amazing Hank Trick!"

The performer now shows a pair of hanks tied together that are supposed to be the colors the boy gets, but they match the girl's instead. As he realizes his mistake, he points to the girl and says, "These hanks are her colors, not yours." As he says this, the hanks magically change color to match the boy's. The magician doesn't see this, but the audience wastes no time in telling him. As he points to the boy, the colors change again!

The magician is confused, puts away the hanks, and asks the kids, "Who gets which colors?" The audience tells him. Why? Because they are doing the "Amazing Hank Trick!" The performer gives the boy and girl the correct hanks, and proceeds to push the hanks into a clear plastic tube with his wand. First the bottom cap falls off and the hanks fall to the ground. Next he pushes them back into the tube and puts the wand under his arm only to have the kids notice that two of the hanks are now hanging from the end of the wand.

Finally, the performer gets the hanks back in the tube and puts the cap on the tube only to have it pop off. This can be repeated as may times as you wish. The tube is now laid in a stand while the performer takes the sign and lays it flat like a tray. The tube is now removed from the stand and stood upright on the back of the sign and covered with a bandana. The bandana is tossed up into the air while moving the sign back upright. The performer explains that the hanks and tube have vanished, but the audience can see the tube sticking out from the back of the sign. The performer sheepishly tells them he can't do that trick, but with their help he can do something even better. The magic words are said and the hank is removed to show it has magically transformed into a multicolored hank!

You receive the following:

* One special HANK TRICK sign (gimmicked)
* Four 9 inch silk hanks
* One 18 inch muticolor hank
* One magic wand
* Three tubes and caps (1 for a spare)
* One double color changing hank
* One bandana
* One special custom built tube switching stand

Effect #2 - kandu's Rope Trick Plus:
The magician uses three volunteers. Each is handed a piece of rope, and with the help of the magician, they try to tie them into circles. The knots keep coming undone; one volunteer can't grab the rope, and the 3rd one gets just a little piece. Finally they succeed and the rope circles are placed in a tube,but the cap keeps popping off. The tube is laid in the stand, and the sign removed. The volunteers wave the magic wand, and when the rope circles are taken out of the tube they are linked together!

The magician then asks each volunteer to wave the magic wand again, and when they do each knot falls from the circles leaving three continuous loops of rope with no seams!

Incredible Card Trick by Nick Trost

A deck of cards is shown, half red and the other half blue. Spectator takes his packet and is asked to shuffle and cut the packet several times. Now he is asked to ribbon spread the packet and push out one card, 'his free choice'. This card is placed on top of the magicians half. The magician cuts and shuffles his packet and places a card on the spectator's packet.

The packets are ribbon spread again and the blue packet has a red card in it face down and the blue pqlacket has a red card face down. When these cards are turned over they both match.

The spectators will assume that all the cards are the same (like a one -way deck) but when the red and blue packets are turned over they are found to be all blank.

A breathtaking new concept from the minds of Larry Becker and Lee Earle.

Effect

Start with a deluxe, zippered, personal planner and binder. Inside are a dozen clear vinyl pages, each holding six business cards back to back for a total of 72 different cards. Every card is unique - no two have similar businesses, names, images, logos, addresses, etc.

Hand the binder to a spectator to browse through to confirm that they are real business cards, all different. You don't have to touch the binder again until the routine is over. Then, out of your view and from anywhere in the binder, the spectator removes two cards. After verifying they represent different companies, cities, and phone numbers, they hand one of them to a person close by. The binder is tossed to a third, completely random person of the spectators choice.

That individual opens the binder, again - while you cannot possibly see, takes out any full page, removes all six business cards from the page and looks them over to confirm that each one is unique. Then, they discard all but two, using their discretion. You truly have no clue about what cards they hold!

While the second spectator chooses their cards, you turn to work with the first two spectators, each of who holds a single, freely and randomly selected card that has been kept hidden from your sight. You ask one to concentrate on their card's telephone number, digit by digit, including area code. You openly write numbers on a drawing pad and then ask him to read aloud the phone number on that card. The audience can clearly see that you have successfully identified all ten digits!

Turning to a fresh page in your drawing pad, you request the second helper to visualize the graphic elements on their card - colors, shapes, photos, etc. - while you doodle on your pad. Then they tell everyone what's printed on the card and your sketch matches their description of the cards they hold - inexplicit detail!

Finally you ask anyone with a cell phone to dial the number on either business card that the third spectator has randomly selected. You ask them to repeat whatever the individual on the other end of the call says. As the connection is being made on his own cell phone, you write furiously on your pad - turning the pages like a whirling dervish as you fill up each sheet with words, sketches and numbers. When the call is answered - the participant repeats everything he hears from the other end of the connection.

Simultaneously, you show page after page of your pad - detailing an almost word for word precognition of names, replies, comments!

Quality

The Process

Unlike most of the cards manufactured today, the cutting blade used in traditionally cut cards starts at the face of each card and punches through to its back. As a result, a sharp edge is created on the backside of each card and a rounded edge, which facilitates a flawless weave during each shuffle, is formed on the card's face.

Traditionally cut cards ensure that card men and magicians can easily interlace the cards to produce crisp, clean shuffles, especially with some of the more intricate shuffling techniques like the one-handed shuffle, and the faro shuffle, both in-hand, and on the table.

For over 100 years traditional card cutting was the norm, but the process was changed about fifteen years ago. Casinos demand traditionally cut cards, and so does Richard Turner. Shouldn't you?

A two in one piece of mental magic inspired by the carnival days of old. Solid constriction and wonderful graphics makes this a pleasure to perform and very collectible. Side one displays three crisp new one hundred dollar bills and four selection cards underneath. The performer mentions that there is a one in four chance to win the big bucks as there is one ace (money card) and three jokers present on the board under each question mark card. The spectator has three chances to win making the odds in their favor even better with, the understanding the last card left will go to the house / performer. In every instance the performer is left with the ace and the spectator gets the three jokers and no win cards. The win cards can be shown in any position on the board and is completely under the control of the performer.

Side two is a miracle in mental magic. fifty two all different cards are displayed around the board. The board is then turned around to show the backs of the cards. A card frame with three windows hangs from the front of the board. The performer takes a piece of paper and writes three predictions on it. He then folds it in half and hands it off to a spectator for safe keeping. He then asks for three selections. As he runs his finger around the board, a spectator says stop. The card is placed back showing in the first slot on the frame and the other two selections are made in the same way. The selections are made in a very fair manner. Once all the selections are made, the prediction is read and the three card frame is turned around to reveal the chosen cards match the prediction.

The incredible penetration miracle created by the late Terri Rogers is now available.

Even when you know how it works, Terri Roger's BLOCKBUSTER is probably going to fool you. You are the performer so just imagine how a spectator is going to react.

The effect is brief and to the point. The magician shows a polished block of wood with a slot cut deeply into it. At right angles to the slot a hole is drilled right through the block. Through a block a ribbon has been threaded and the ends of the ribbon are tied in a knot. The spectator can see that the ribbon passes through the entire block by looking through the slot.

The spectator is handed a small metal ring to examine and is asked to extend his hand palms upward. The magician places the threaded block onto the spectator's hand. The spectator is asked to push the ring deeply into the slot and the hold the ring firmly and release the block from his hand. He hesitates expecting the block and ribbon to drop to the floor - it doesn't as he discovers to his amazement that the ring has penetrated the ribbon. Read that again. It is impossible. And remember that the ring and block are totally unfaked. The effect takes place on the spectator's hand. There are no threads, pins, or magnets. This is the nearest you are going to get to a self-working miracle. The method will intrigue you as much as the effect will astound the spectators.

Inspired by the work of Connie Haden, Doc Eason and Paul Green, Joe Porper and Pete Biro bring you the Poker Chip Surprise. The performer brings out a small leather pouch, opens it and displays three casino poker chips. Placing them into the left hand, the red chip is taken away in the right hand. When both hands are opened the chips have transposed, the red is in the left and the other two chips in the right. This is repeated, then repeated again, however this time in a spectator's own hands! The transposition happens again!

To finish, the red chip is placed into the pouch, yet still changes places with the other two chips. You finish clean, and the chips can be examined and can be used for other routines.

Animated Magic Color Book by Granell

This is not just a coloring book, it's 10 effects in a single book!

The magician shows a coloring book to his audience. At a glance, the book is completely blank in all its pages. The performer asks which characteristic is well known to magicians. When he shows the book again, it appears to have a cartoon of a hat and a colored fan of cards.

While leafing through the book the cards appear smaller in a sequence of cartoons, until they disappear totally. At once, the picture of the colored deck inside the case appears and, surprise -- the card deck becomes absolutely real, leaving only the book!

When the magician leafs through the book again, from the picture of the empty hat arrives a picture of a bunny. The deck of cards is now given to a spectator to choose a card. The card is placed inside the book. While the pages are flipped through again, a picture showing the bunny taking the card magically appears. It takes the card and cuts it in four pieces. Then it unites the pieces but in an incorrect order. At the end of the book a real card appears out of the book totally restored but arranged as shown in its incorrect order.

The spectator now chooses a second card. When showing the interior of the book, the animation of the pages shows the rabbit jumping outside of the hat, it puts its paw into the hat, takes out a card, shows it, and it turns out to be the same card the spectator chose!

To finish, the book is shown with the cartoons of the rabbit with a wand in its hand. It transforms the wand in a silk, and as it is extended it appears to have the words "The End!" When the last page of the book is shown the silk becomes real leaving only the book!
