You invite a spectator to take part in a card game. To do this, you present a set of seven cards consisting of six loser cards and a winner card.

You put the winner card among the loser cards, so no one knows exactly where it is. Then you tell the audience that the spectator has 6 chances to win the prize offered. A spectator is told to pick a number between 1 and 6 and with this number 6 rounds are played. As soon as the winner card is turned over, the spectator wins.

Let's say the spectator picks the number 4.
The first three cards are removed from the top of the set and the 4th card is turned face up. It is a loser card.

This is repeated five times and every time the card is turned face up it is loser card. The spectator had six chances but he was unlucky and didn't win.

Suddenly, your mobile phone rings. You answer the phone and the audience hears you talking to a caller who accuses you of having manipulated the previous game by making the winner card vanish, so there was no way anyone could have won. Eventually you make a deal with the caller: You agree to play another round and if what he says turns out to be true, he wins the first prize, but if you can prove that one can actually win the game, he agrees to call you the "Greatest Magician Ever" from now on.

No sooner said than done: You remove three cards again and turn the 4th card face up - it is the winner card!

The performer wants to show that the hand is quicker than the eye.

He shows four 9 of Hearts. He explains, "First of all, I will do things very slowly. If you don't follow what I do, I will stop right now! Otherwise, I will go faster!"

The performer turns one card face down very slowly, and put it inside the face up pack of cards. These actions are clear to the audience.

"Ok, I will try to go faster now."

He does a very fast move. The audience feels that something happens, but they can't see anything! Even so, the performer shows that all the cards are now face down!

Now, he left the audience several chances to see what happens; the spectators don't see anything, but one more card turns upside down each time!

The last card is the last chance. "And if I go in slow motion, as with a DVD, picture after picture, maybe you can see what happens?"

The performer acts as if he pushes a "slow motion button" on his arm. From now on, the actions are made slow motion: in full view, he turns the last card face up with the tip of his fingers.

In this DVD, all routines are card effects which can be performed with a regular deck of cards. As a performing magician for more then 9 years, Alan has creative insight about card magic that he shares in this DVD.

Alan performs and then explains in detail the following 6 effects:

Named Deck: A Joker with a corner cut off is used to find the spectator's selected card. The Selected card and the joker swapped places magically! The selected card now has a corner cut off while the joker becomes a normal card!

Hypermind: Magician shows a deck with names of people written on the back of every card. Spectator chooses 2 cards and the total will add up to a selected card which matches the prediction by the magician.

When the card is turned face down, the name on the back of the selected card is the spectator's name! As a final kicker, the remaining cards are revealed and magically in sequential order in black and red, Aces to Kings!

Satellite Moon: A deck is shuffled and then later mixed up by the spectator. The 2 stacks are later revealed that they are in the same order of each other.

Visual Exchange: 2 random cards are lost in the deck. The cards appear on the top and lost in the deck again. One of the cards jumps to the top and upon the spectator inspection, the top card has switched to the 2nd random card.

Interchange: 2 cards are selected, lost and shuffled into the deck. Surprisingly, when the shuffling stopped, the 2 cards act as indicators where the black and red cards are separated.

Teleport Matchbox: Matchbox is shown empty. When the magician shakes it, a coin appears. When the box is closed and the match stick is lit, the coin has disappeared in the box! Everything is examinable by the spectator!

The performer shows both sides of his hands unmistakably empty. At a nerve-racking slow and deliberate pace, his right hand reaches out into the air and closes to a fist, as if he caught hold of something. This same hand then makes a small tossing motion upward and suddenly a large 45 x 45 cm silk appeared in mid-air, which gently flutters down onto the performer's waiting hand.

The magician approaches a spectator and tells him that he looks like 35. While the spectator is still puzzled why a stranger tries to estimate his age, the magician takes out a deck of cards and shows that there are numbers written on the backs from 1 to 52. (The deck is randomly shuffled so that the faces and the numbers on the backs are mixed.) He explains a little game he plays by guessing which number a person might pick and he is absolutely sure to get the "35" from the first spectator. As a number is already announced, the spectator is allowed to name any playing card. The card is removed and shown that it indeed has the number 25 written on the back. The procedure is repeated with a second and third spectator, but this time a playing card is named while the spectators have to choose any number. When these two cards are removed, they again perfectly match!

Packet Tricks are always popular. Using only a few cards you can perform very strong, baffling, visual magic. Here you have ten packet tricks form the world's top 'packet trick' experts.

Japanese Aces (Shigeo Futagawa): A real fooler where you and the spectator mix the Aces three times (the last one face up and face down) but the Aces always separate!

Poor Man's Monte (Richard Vollmer): A fun-to-watch-fun-to-do Monte type routine using only four regular cards!

Red Oil, Blue Water (Peter Kane): An oil and water routine with a difference. The red cards have red backs and the black cards have blue cards. Yet, the cards mix and un-mix in a three-phase killer routine!

Spectator Cheats (Reinhard Muller): The four Aces are mixed with other cards by a spectator; some cards face up, some face down. At the end the Aces are seen to be the only reversed cards in the packet!

When this routine was first released in the Pyscrets publication 'Liber Mentis', it created a lot of buzz. On the table you see two yellow tubes, in front of them a Pringles tube and a soda can (You choose your favorite brand). Now you cover both items with the tubes, wave your hand on top and magically they change places! Repeat this again one or two more times and every single time your magic works.

Now you place the Pringles tube away into your suitcase or have one of your sidekicks at the show to "secretly" steal it, do a magic gesture an the Pringles tube reappear inside of the yellow tube. The magician approaches a spectator and tells him that he looks like 35. While the spectator is still puzzled why a stranger tries to estimate his age, the magician takes out a deck of cards and shows that there are numbers written on the backs from 1 to 52. (The deck is randomly shuffled so that the faces and the numbers on the backs are mixed.) He explains a little game he plays by guessing which number a person might pick and he is absolutely sure to get the "35" from the first spectator. As a number is already announced, the spectator is allowed to name any playing card. The card is removed and shown that it indeed has the number 25 written on the back. The procedure is repeated with a second and third spectator, but this time a playing card is named while the spectators have to choose any number. When these two cards are removed, they again perfectly match!

For the purpose of this explination, the routine assumes that the magician is male and the spectator is female, but you can of course adapt it accordingly. "Chaque a don gout" as the French say.

The magician starts talking about gifts and cards, perhaps in the context of birthdays or even Valentine's Day. He promises to give a present to the female spectator using a very special deck of cards, containing varoius gift ideas. Taking out a deck he shows that he has written the names of all kinds of presents, such as a silver pendant, a holiday, a gold watch, a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates (and other such goodies) onto the backs of a well shuffled deck. The deal: whatever card she names, he promises to give her whatever present or gife is written on the back of her chosen card. He adds, with a smile, that if she is not happy with the present, she can instead give that present to the magician. Her chosen card is taken out of the deck face up and amidst much excitement, slowly turned over to reveal the words "A Magical Kiss."

Played right and with charm, this usually results in plenty of smiles and laughter, and at least a friendly peck on the cheek!

As we all know, the way you present this is considerably more important than the method! Choose your spectator wisely, always be both nice and humble... and, as Paolo always advises, never underestimate the wisdon of magical David Devant's brilliant aphorism "All done by kindness."

1.You Ring? - A ring is borrowed, a rubber band is held at the fingertips of the right hand and placed through the center of the ring. A second rubber band is placed behind the other rubber band using your left hand. The spectator holds the ring as the bands instantaneously penetrate through the ring and each other and the spectator is left holding the ring with the rubber bands still at the fingertips of your hands.

2.Rubber band through Thumb (Ellis Version) - Usually done in a quick motion but this version is more visual and powerful by doing the penetration in slow motion and the spectator holding the rubber band. A fun little miracle.

3.Rubber band through Ring (Ellis Version) - Visual and powerful by doing the penetration with the spectator holding the ring. A fun little miracle.

4.Say Vanish! - Four cards are selected (signed is an option) then mixed into the deck. From a previous effect 4 aces are already on the table which you pick up and placed into an empty card box for a spectator to hold. A rubber band is wrapped twice around the deck and when the spectator says "vanish" the rubber band disappears and the deck and hands are shown front and back. The rubber band is gone! In an instant the rubber band reappears capturing 4 cards. Instead of the selected cards being captured the 4 aces have been captured and the box in the spectators hand contains the spectator selected cards!

You Blue It! - A selected card from a red backed deck is signed on the face with a blue marker. The signed card then turns into a blue backed card as you exclaim "You Blue it", then the signature visibly vanishes from the card, then it turns into a red backed card and all appears normal as you say "I would like you to have a souvenir". You then put the signature back onto the card and turn the back to blue once again. Then the card is given to the spectator to keep and the deck can be openly spread. No gaffs!

The Lottery is a full performance routine captivating the spirit and essence of Shirley Jackson's famous short story from the nineteen forties. Five lottery contestants are chosen from the audience. After a brief synopsis of the Lottery story a small black bag is introduced. Which contains four shiny white stones and one dark black stone. The bag is shaken up and each contestant reaches their hand inside removing either a white stone or the winning "black rock".

Once everyone has an item in their hands. The performer attempts to divine which one does in fact have the winning lottery ball. Through a humorous series of questions and answers slowly the participants are eliminated until only two are left. One of these two people has the winning lottery stone, which can only mean a sure and certain death by stoning!Of course the winner is appropriately predicted and they are of course left unharmed, but they've learned that some lotteries are not always rewarded with money.. but death!

As a kicker ending, the performer opens a small envelope that has been in view on the table. Inside it reads exactly who the winner of the lottery will be!

A series of traditional ESP cards are introduced to a subject. For this test only two symbols are necessary - the square and the circle.
An experiment of psychic ability will begin momentarily. The purpose is to determine whether or not someone can psychically intuit whether the cards bear a square or a circle.Ten cards - (five circles and five squares) are shuffled together and held up one at a time.

To start, one card is held up and the subject must divine which shape it holds. This card is then openly shown to the subject, allowing him to see how strong or poor his psychic intuition is.The experiment is continued with the second card, allowing the subject to again see his psychic progress. Now the real test begins, the remaining eight cards are held up and quickly placed into whichever pile the subject believes they belong.

To conclude the experiment the cards are turned over and fanned out.

1. Multiple spectator's pick cards. The cards are put back into the deck, and the spectator shuffles the deck. Without palming or difficult sleights, you are able to maintain complete control over their cards even though the deck is in their hands. When the deck is handed back to you, you can continue with your trick. The deck can even be borrowed - this will have no effect on the card control.

2. You want to force a card, but you are dealing with skeptics, so you hand the deck out to be shuffled first. When you take the deck back you are immediately ready to force the card.

3. You are performing strolling/walk around magic and are using gaffed cards or duplicates. The UCCU will allow you to store those cards and bring them in and out of play, invisibly, without taking up pocket space

4. You are left with a duplicate in your deck and the spectator wants to "examine" the deck to make sure it is normal. 5. An envelope is displayed on the table. Three spectator's signs playing cards, and put them back into the deck. The deck is handed to the spectator. The deck is waved over the envelope. With your hands shown empty, the card is cleanly produced from the envelope. Then your wallet is taken out and waved over the deck - You cleanly reach into your wallet and pull the second selection out of your wallet. The final spectator holds the deck with one hand and reaches into their pocket with their other hand to grab their wallet. You take their wallet with empty hands, cleanly reach into their wallet and produce the card once again!

FACE-TO-FACE COINCIDENCE: You place three cards on the table and these are inserted into the deck by spectators. They find the same symbols!

ESP SWINDLE: A spectator shuffles the deck at random, yet he's able to pair all the cards (two Circles, two Squares, etc. all the way through)!

THREE ODD COUPLES: The cards are dealt on the table in pairs and a spectator picks three pairs by placing three coins on them (free choice). These are the only pairs containing two matching cards; all the other pairs do not match!

FIVE-WAY COINCIDENCE: A spectator cuts a portion from the deck at random and when these cards are dealt the five Circles (or other symbols) appear!

DIE-ABOLICAL PROPHECY: You place a prediction in view. A spectator, using three regular dice finds a symbol in the deck. It matches your prediction!

ESP PREDICTION SUPREME: You place three cards on the table. Three numbers given by three spectators find three random cards. They match your three cards!

OUIJA MIRACLE: Using two regular dice, a spectator finds two matching pairs from a shuffled deck!

DOWSING BY DESIGN: A shuffled deck is dealt in pairs. One card is dropped onto two pairs. These five cards are seen to be (say) the five Stars! All the other pairs do not match.

ESP COLOR SCHEME: Five Stars and five Circles (or any other signs) are separated by a spectator even though he shuffles them totally under his control!

ESP TRIPLE COINCIDENCE: A unique effect! Three cards are selected by a spectator from a red-backed deck and you pick three cards from a blue-backed deck. The three cards are matching!

"A cool and animated levitation of a card or dollar bill...

My goodness, this little effect created a shit-storm when it was released in 2000! I don't think the attacks had been so brutal since "Cosmosis" (in the mid 1980s). Anyway, this simple and effective idea was loved by some (see, for example, Richard Kaufman in Genii Magazine), and HATED by others (see, for example, Michael Close in MAGIC Magazine). I relish dividing opinion, and Alida certainly did that.

However, it was also a genuine stepping stone in the thought processes that would eventually lead to "Enlightenment: The Ultimate Floating Card"-which is way superior. So, controversial or not, I hesitate to dismiss Alida as we digitize the BackStory Project.

While the physical product is no longer available on dealer's shelves, ("Enlightenment" made it obsolete), we are very happy to supply a digital version for you to explore. And, there should be no complaints at this price point!

So what is the 5th Corner? It's a splash of ideas and techniques with a single playing card and it's ripped corners. You are both "one ahead" and "two behind" at the SAME TIME. IONIZE THE WATER IN A DRINKING BOTTLE, MAKING IT ALMOST LIGHTER THAN AIR!

Aqua~imp is one powerful piece of "incidental" magic. It appears almost impromptu. This illusion of spontaneity actually enhances the mystery-for it is at this magical (and supposedly offhanded moment) you give your spectators a thought-provoking, gentle, and fun glimpse at an un-imagined world of possibility.

Here's what Aqua~imp looks like: You join friends or clients at a social or office environment where there happen to be bottles of drinking water being consumed. This can be at a bar, outdoor event, sporting occasion, party, anywhere. Bottles of drinking water are ubiquitous these days. Commenting on someones particular brand of bottled water, the performer states: "You know this (insert brand) bottled water really does have amazing properties. The ions in the water can transcend to pure helium, making the entire bottle lighter, almost blimp-like... Let me show you. May I have your bottle?"

The performer takes the spectator's almost empty bottle of water, uncaps it, and spills a little on his outstretched palm. He now smells the water, breathing in deeply and commenting: "Yes, this is the real stuff... amazing. Here, you smell. Can you detect the faint scent of 'jasmine?' Upon ionization the water gives off that scent!"

The spectator looks a bit puzzled, being able to detect nothing, but the performer continues and provides proof... The bottle is re-capped and the placed on the table so it is lying down flat. Several other bottles are also laid down flat on the table. The performer now rolls the spectator's bottle under his palm, back and forth across the table. He then allows the spectator to do the same. "Just roll it back and forth, the remaining water will transcend to a higher state and the bottle will become lighter. It will make the bottle want to float off the table. It's a bit too heavy to actually do that, but you should see it try darned hard!" After rolling the bottle flat on the table for a few seconds, the spectator lifts her hand and the bottom of the bottle rises up, off the table, following her hand. "It almost does look like a blimp trying to take flight! Push it down flat again. Now release it. Look it really has become lighter!"

The sight of the bottle bobbing up and down is quite freaky. Especially as the other bottles have remained flat on the table throughout. Remember this can be the spectator's bottle. Commenting that, "The transcended air is too dangerous to leave floating around," the performer offers to: "...re-compress the molecules, removing all evidence of the ionization." He instructs the spectator to once again press the bottle flat to the table, but to roll it in an East-West direction. This she does. Upon completion she lifts her hand and the bottle now remains lying flat on the table. The molecules inside the bottle now having returned to their normal state. Further, the bottle is now uncapped and a little of the water tipped out onto your palm. Everyone can now smell the scent of jasmine! Even the spectator's water bottle will smell like jasmine all day long!

The bottle bobbing upwards looks quite stange indeed. Clearly, gravity is being over-thrown, if just by a little! You'll make this up, ready to go for 20c, literally! Even use a borrowed bottle under the right circumstances. There are many ways you can theme this. Is it a "Genie in A Bottle?"... is it "Heavy Water?" ...how about a "Lie Detector" test??? Adult performers could use it as a "Compatability Test."
