Houdini's Diary (Gimmick and Online Instructions) by Wayne Dobson and Alan Wong - Trick

This is Wayne's take on the classic Diary Card effect.

As ever, he has routined it to be SUPER-SIMPLE to perform:

NO STACKS - NO ARITHMETIC - NO MEMORIZING - NO CRIBS
NO SLEIGHT OF HAND - ONLY ONE DIARY - INSTANT RESET

Not only is it a strong effect, but the Houdini theme is intriguing and memorable.

You offer to show them the trick Houdini claimed as his favorite card trick!

It involves a vintage diary - and you managed to get hold of one of Houdini's original private diaries.

As a man fascinated by the occult, Houdini liked to write the name of a playing card against every day in the diary, in the belief that particular cards had resonance with certain days of the year.

The spectator calls out any date in the year that means something special to them: a genuine, free choice.

When you spread the deck face down, every card is blue-backed except for one card - which is red-backed AND bears Houdini's signature on the back!

The spectator only now turns to the date and confirms that the cards for that week are all different. For the first time, they tell you the name of the card at that particular date.

The amazing coincidence is that their chosen date was the very one that Houdini's pet dog died; the single red card is now shown to be the very same card.

You'll love the antique diary and photograph Bob Gill designed and Alan Wong produced especially for this effect.

But most of all, you'll love Wayne's very funny comedy presentation that is the making of this routine: one you'll enjoy performing - every time you do it.

Customer Questions:

  • Q. Does the Diary come with it.
  • A. Yes, it comes with the purchase of the effect.

  • Q. Will it always be the 5 of diamonds? I understand how the other diary tricks work but none of them use a red back card that is choosen
  • A. No it will not always be the 5 of Diamonds. It will depend on the date they choose. For example, if they choose a different date, the card may end up being the 8 of Hearts, etc.

  • Q. Can you use another deck of cards, such as Bicycle 1800 vintage deck?
  • A. Yes, you can use any deck you wish. Just not a red Bicycle deck because the supplied Houdini Card that comes with the effect is already red, and you want to use a deck that contrasts with the red card so that it stands out.

  • Q. How clean are you at the end?
    Is the deck examinable?
    Is the diary examinable?
  • A. You're pretty clean at the end. In fact, if performed as taught, you end completely reset for the next performance (where a completely different card may be chosen). Only one card is technically "dirty" during this effect, and with proper spectator management, you don't have to have them examine it. The deck itself is normal. And the Diary is technically examinable up to a point (but I wouldn't let them look too long or else they may discover something). In the handling, you are showing them the diary and they are seeing it with their own two eyes. No need to hand it out to them. Trust us.....the way this effect is taught in the instructions, there will be no doubt in the spectator's mind that you are performing a miracle.

  • Q. You have said that it does not always have to be the 5 of diamonds the was in the video but if they choose another date with a different card how can you use the same red card with Houdini written on it?
  • A. That is what makes this handling so diabolical and clever. After you perform it, you can end completely reset for the next performance where a completely different card might be chosen.

  • Q. Is there any limit to the card that might be chosen - in other words, if you repeat the trick 5 or 6 times, is it possible to end up with 5 or 6 different cards?
  • A. Yes, it's possible to end up with a different card on each performance!
